Decoding and phonics
To explicitly connect decoding, spelling and vocabulary work together.

Stanovich (1986) observed that students who experienced difficulty in basic reading skills typically resulted in inadequate time engaged in text reading.
Due to lack of exposure to text, a relatively mild decoding problem may eventually arise, this can be characterised by low fluency, poor vocabulary, and limited world knowledge, all contributing to impaired reading comprehension. (Winch et al, 2012).
To counteract this teachers need to spend adequate time teaching the art of phonics and decoding.
